About The Role

Are you ready to join a dynamic team that shapes the future of power infrastructure in the U.S.? As a Groundman at United Utility, you will be at the heart of our operations, helping to ensure the reliability and efficiency of our electrical systems. The Groundman position is a first step to a rewarding career in the construction and maintenance of our nation’s Power Grid.

You will assist your team in building, repairing, and maintaining overhead electrical distribution systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Securing the safety of yourself and others
  • Assisting fellow line-workers in meeting project objectives
  • Joining storm restoration efforts in times of need
  • Operating vehicles and equipment in a professional manner
  • Working safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead systems
  • Inspecting rubber goods and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Understanding when to wear personal protective equipment
  • Strings overhead wire
  • Setting poles and anchors
  • Assisting with installing transformers, lightning arresters, cutouts, cross-arms, insulators, switches and switch gear
  • Assisting in replacing fuses in transformers and clearing faulted circuits and systems
  • Working with energized high voltage systems requiring care to protect lives
  • Understanding basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying
  • Possessing basic knowledge of materials used in line work
  • Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit
  • Familiar with induced voltage
  • Capable of assisting with installation and hookup of a single-phase transformer
  • Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape
  • Understanding basic concepts of equipment setup and grounding
  • Capable of working at heights and/or in confined spaces
  • Understands minimum approach distance
  • Understands excavation and shoring requirements
  • Capable of checking voltage on transformers
  • Capable of installing and removing a service
  • Must be able to climb different types of structures and possess the necessary tools to do so
Key Qualifications
  • High School Degree, or equivalent, with 3 years of experience
  • Valid CDL Class A driver’s license
  • Understanding of basic and/or advanced electrical principles, including knowledge of electricity and how to safely work around it
  • Knowledge of customer specifications and proficiency in all phases of line construction
  • Ability to comply with proper safety standards, procedures, and work practices
  • Clear vision with the ability to judge distance and space relationships, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors
  • Ability to work outdoors, even in extreme weather conditions
  • Available to work weekends and/or nights
  • Willling to work out of market or away from home as work demands, traveling extensively when needed
Key Nice-To-Haves
  • 5 years of experience
  • OSHA 10 and Buck Squeeze Certifications a plus
