- The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring quality veterinary care for all pets, advocates for pets, educates clients on pet health, and helps maintain a safe and effective hospital environment.
- Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
- Act as the extra eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to maximize productivity and quality of care.
- Communicate with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and associates to maintain patient flow.
- Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all times, including performing tasks that do not require direct veterinary assistance, preparing for procedures, ensuring client and pet comfort, and monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets as allowed by state practice acts.
- Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, hospital services, and other issues.
- Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.
- Ensure safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.
- Assist with surgery as applicable.
- Utilize technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties.
- Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Certificate of completion from a NAVTA approved Veterinary Assistant program, or equivalent education, training, and experience.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Must be able to perform NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant program skills to aid practice efficiency.
- Must be at least 18 years old to perform radiography (x-ray) duties and radiologic exposure.
- One year related experience required; customer service experience preferred.
- Ability to multi-task; manage multiple tasks with accuracy under distraction.
- Fluent English communication (writing and speaking) with strong written and verbal skills.
- Organizational ability; systematic approach; ability to create order from chaos.
- Problem solving; translate problems into practical solutions.
- Client service skills; attentive, courteous, and informative service; derive satisfaction from helping others.

- Computer skills; proficient with medical software and Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel.

- May require more than 40 hours per week; includes weekends and evenings.
- Noise level is moderately high; must have ambulatory ability and ability to lift up to 50 pounds; stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as needed.
- Good hand-eye coordination; visual acuity for keyboard use and equipment operation; environmental exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medications/controlled substances.
- NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant program certificate or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred; 18+ years old for radiography duties.
- One year related experience; customer service experience preferred.

Compensation and BenefitsThe pay range for this role is $15.19 - $19.41 Hourly. The pay range listed reflects a general hiring range for the area; the specific rate is based on experience, skill level, and education, and may vary by location or applicable minimum wage laws.
