Responsibilities
  • The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care.
  • Supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family.
  • Functions within the Mayo Nursing Care Model with accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Provides leadership through activities such as preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources.
  • Maintains excellent communication skills; mentors and teaches; may participate on committees or projects.
What do Pre-Op/PACU Nurses do at Mayo Clinic?
  • Focus on phases of patient care before and after a surgical procedure (Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, Phase 2 PACU); do not perform surgery.
  • Assess, quickly identify and resolve pre-operative issues.
  • Start and monitor IVs, administer pre-operative medications and provide pre-operative instruction and explanation of patient rights and procedures.
  • In the PACU, provide care for post-op patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia.
  • Traditional onboarding – 12-week clinical orientation for nurses with Preop/PACU or higher acuity experience.
  • Fast-paced, critical care nursing concepts.
  • On-call requirements:
    Weekdays (Mon-Fri) approximately 1 per 4-week schedule, ; weekends (Sat/Sun) 12-hour shift approximately every 13th-14th weekend.

This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship requires state licensure and completion of the Visa Screen or equivalent certification.

Qualifications

All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the Department of Nursing with an RN start date after April 1, 2020, must provide documented evidence of program completion of their baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within 5 years from the last day of the month of their RN start date. All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with an RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing as stipulated by the degree requirement in place at time of hire.

  • Graduate of a nursing program
  • Graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program preferred, but not required
  • One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Computer skills required; prior EMR experience preferred
  • Ability to work flexible hours (days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends) and on-call
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communication, and critical thinking skills
License or Certification
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency
  • ACLS required in Florida; additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area
