The Registered Nurse (RN) Diabetes Nurse Educator is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care. This role functions within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and provides leadership through preceptor, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
Responsibilities- Coordinate nursing care and provide direct patient care.
- Educate patients, families, and staff about diabetes management.
- Implement and evaluate all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
- Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, acuity, and resources.
- Lead preceptor role and participate in committees or projects.
- Mentor and provide quality improvement activities.
- Baccalaureate nursing degree (BSN) required.
- Current RN license in an applicable state.
- One year RN experience in the last five years preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Computer skills required; prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on‑call.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) competency required for Arizona and Florida; other states may vary.
- American Red Cross Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) credential required within two years of employment at an ADA certified site.
- Additional state licensure or specialty certification/training may be required.
