Job Summary:
NSC is seeking a skilled Sheet Metal Technician to perform repairs and installations on various maritime vessels, including Navy ships, Military Sealift Command ships, and commercial vessels. The role involves both shipboard and shop tasks essential for planning, layout, fabrication, and assembly of sheet metal structures. Candidates should possess a comprehensive understanding of ship terminology, blueprint reading, measurements, and the ability to interpret job specifications and drawings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Comply with OSHA standards and adhere to NSC's best safety practices.
- Arrive punctually at designated work sites and work assigned shifts and overtime as necessary.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment at all times, especially at the end of each shift.
- Complete daily work assignments and report on the status of unfinished tasks for shift turnover.
- Provide high-quality work and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required.
- Uphold NSC's Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy to ensure a respectful workplace.
- Execute written and verbal instructions.
- Manage unexpected events related to work tasks in a professional manner.
- Prepare the work area for safe operations, particularly when hot work is required.
- Conduct operational tests on reinstalled equipment and document results.
- Perform preproduction inspections and submit an As-found condition report.
- Measure, lay out, and mark structures for removal based on drawings and specifications.
- Remove existing structures, furniture, and ventilation ducting as needed.
- Construct templates and fabricate replacement pieces.
- Utilize hand and power tools to trim, file, grind, deburr, and buff surfaces.
- Perform welding, soldering, bolting, and bonding of components.
- Install various equipment including berthing and galley equipment as per drawings and specifications.
- Oversee tasks performed by assigned helpers or improvers.
- Ability to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence.
- Comprehensive understanding of ship repair terminology and compartment location.
- Physically capable of wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) as prescribed under OSHA standards.
- Capable of writing Condition Found Reports (CFR) detailing the ship's material condition and recommending corrective actions.
- Effective communication skills to confer job-related information to supervisors and team members.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting structural drawings, sketches, and specifications.
- Knowledge of NAVSEA, ABS, Coast Guard standards, and manufacturers' tech manuals is preferable.
- Experience repairing and installing shipboard habitability spaces and ventilation systems.
- Familiarity with the principles of balancing air systems, including taking readings and documentation.
- Experience using hand and power tools, as well as fabricating machines.
- Tack welding experience using SMAW or GMAW.
- Proficiency in basic math, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Minimum of six (6) years of related experience, with three (3) years in a maritime environment.
