ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSEWith minimal supervision, the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible to provide EHS guidance,supervision and support to the workforce. Learn EHS codes and standards, accident prevention principles, and their application to industrial operations; to learn techniques of making field inspections, conducting investigations, and identifying hazards; and to learn other relevant skills. Conduct daily inspections of assigned areas ensuring that all operations (including those of Sub-Contractors) are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and NASSCO EHS policies and procedures;
identify EHS hazards or deficiencies and initiates corrective action through production supervision. Prepare written reports on inspections, accident investigations, employee complaints or concerns. Conducts various EHS training classes as required, (new hire safety orientation; employee recall safety orientation) and other specialized safety training. Conduct subcontractor safety orientation. Supports and commits to organization and Company’s mission, vision, and values.
- Typically has a High School diploma or GED; with typical six (6) to ten (10) years of directly related EHS experience or a BA Degree with four (4) to seven (7) years in a related field.
- Preferably in Industrial Safety or Environmental Compliance or significant experience in shipyard trade operations and typical four (4) years of experience performing the EHS inspection duties.
- Knowledge of OSHA record keeping requirements and familiarity with basic medical terminology.
- Knowledge of Federal, State and Local Environmental requirements.
- Continuing education in approved Environmental, Health and Safety related courses towards a Professional Certificate.
- Preferably has OSHA 5410 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Maritime Industry training.
- Preferably has OSHA 3095 Electrical Standards training.
- Preferably has OSHA 3115 Fall Protection
- Preferably has OSHA 521 OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene
The EHS Specialist must be knowledgeable of:
- Applicable Federal and State OSHA regulations;
- Presentation techniques for Environmental, Health and Safety training;
- Techniques used to recognize EHS hazards;
- Working with hazardous materials;
- Ship configuration and Shipbuilding techniques and shipyard operations;
- Safe operation of tools and machinery;
- Computer software programs.
- Interact with customers, subcontractors and vendors on behalf of the company.
- Independently controlling EHS programs at offsite locations.
The EHS Specialist must ensure that the employees are adequately protected from hazards:
- Monitor workplaces frequently to identify unsafe or unhealthful conditions.
- Take prompt action to correct hazardous conditions.
- If a serious hazard is detected take immediate interim action to safeguard employees.
- Encourage employees to report unsafe or unhealthful conditions.
- Seek suggestions from employees for improvement of workplace conditions.
- Compile and discern statistical trends and communicate them to the management team.
- Write and edit applicable EHS instructions.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPSReports to the Environmental General Manager dependent on the core functions in the organization. Maintains internal contacts with Production, Repair, Maintenance, Medical, and Emergency Response personnel.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Must have a valid US Passport and be willing to travel internationally for short periods of time
