On-Call Lead Environmental Engineer

Overview

On-Call Lead Environmental Engineer for WSP in White Springs, FL (also Jacksonville, Gainesville, Tampa). Provide technical support and direction for grassing establishment and maintenance for mine closure projects, manage gopher tortoise relocation program, support wildlife management program. Requires hands‑on expertise in natural resource management, environmental permitting, compliance, and listed species coordination.

• Technical support for grassing establishment and maintenance: lead and direct grassing projects ensuring successful establishment and ongoing maintenance.
• Apply expertise in land reclamation, erosion control, and soil analysis to optimize vegetation cover and meet regulatory success criteria.
• Manage gopher tortoise relocation program: oversee surveys, permitting, site maintenance, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Support wildlife management program: provide technical and operational support for threatened and endangered species surveys, habitat restoration, biodiversity enhancement.
• Perform professional environmental engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of air emission sources, hazardous or solid waste facilities, water supply facilities, etc.
• Conduct environmental site assessments.
• Interact with subcontractors and clients.
• Develop action plans for multi‑scale pollution, corrosion, hazardous waste, environment control projects and programs.
• Collaborate with professionals to provide future‑ready solutions.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering or closely related discipline.
• 7+ years of relevant post‑education experience in environmental engineering, natural resource management, and compliance monitoring.
• Demonstrated success in environmental management and land reclamation projects for mining and industrial operations.
• Experience with gopher tortoise surveys, relocation, and long‑term recipient site management.
• Strong technical knowledge of NPDES stormwater and wastewater programs.
• Expertise in constructed wetlands, pollinator habitat restoration, and lake restoration.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
• Engineer license required.
• Excellent critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to develop and implement compliance strategies for complex environmental projects.
• Well‑defined knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.

• Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering or closely related field.
• Familiarity with Florida regulatory environments.
• History of successful permitting for major mining and reclamation projects.
