We are looking for Traffic Technicians for the City of Jacksonville. This role involves coordinating, inspecting, monitoring, and reviewing the placement of traffic control devices to support related traffic engineering projects. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used to determine the appropriate location and placement of traffic control devices such as detour markers, street signs, and pavement markings.

Employees will work in both office and field environments under general supervision with some latitude in setting priorities.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect proposed road construction sites to determine traffic control devices needed.
  • Attend pre‑construction conferences and inform contractors of required traffic control devices.
  • Arrange and coordinate installation of traffic control devices such as detour markers, signs, and pavement markings for road construction projects.
  • Inspect construction sites during construction to ensure proper traffic control devices are in place.
  • Inspect new subdivisions to determine necessary street signs and pavement markings and write service orders to install them.
  • Attend final inspections of subdivision construction projects to ensure signs and pavement markings are correctly installed.
  • Recommend changes in traffic control devices, regulations, or other improvements to improve traffic conditions.
  • Research, compile, and analyze traffic volume and accident data to identify causes of high accident rates.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Operate personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and related software applications.
  • Operate motor vehicle.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Perform related work as required.
Knowledge
  • Techniques, methods and procedures for determining location and placement of traffic control devices.
  • Federal Department of Transportation Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways.
  • Traffic data collection methods and techniques.
Skills
  • Inspect construction sites and determine appropriate traffic control devices, signs and pavement markings.
  • Research, compile, and analyze traffic volume and accident data.
  • Maintain required records and prepare reports.
  • Use personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and related software.
  • Use standard office equipment.
  • Operate motor vehicle.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Experience
  • Three years of education and/or experience in traffic data collection or engineering support activities.
Certification & Licenses
  • Valid driver’s license required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment.
  • Qualify and maintain a City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification prior to appointment and during employment.
  • Obtain and maintain the Intermediate Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Certification within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Obtain I.M.S.A. Level I Signs and Markings Certification and Advanced Temporary Traffic Control Certification within twelve (12) months from probationary appointment.
Other Requirements
  • The probationary period for this class is six months.
