Underground Utilities Crew Summary
We are assembling a stormwater/underground utilities crew to remove and replace drainage structures and install reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) 12"–24". The crew will perform excavation, trench safety, structure setting, pipe installation, backfill/compaction, surface restoration, and traffic-control support while meeting DDOT and project specifications.
Key Responsibilities (Crew-wide)- Perform layout assistance, utility locates coordination, and daily Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Set up traffic control per plans; maintain safe, compliant work zones.
- Excavate/trench with proper benching/shoring; maintain trench boxes and confined-space controls.
- Set precast/cast-in-place structures (manholes, inlets, catch basins, junction boxes) to line/grade; install frames/grates and adjust to final elevation.
- Install RCP 12"–24" including bedding, jointing, structure tie-ins, grouting, and concrete collars as required.
- Verify line/grade with lasers, levels, and grade rods; maintain as-built accuracy.
- Backfill and compact to specified density; restore surfaces (stone, asphalt, concrete, soils).
- Control erosion/sediment and maintain housekeeping of the work area.
- Support quality checks, testing/inspection (vacuum/mandrel if applicable), and punch-list completion.
- Complete daily reports, track quantities, and maintain equipment and tools.
Lead Foreman
- Plan daily work, assign tasks, and drive production, quality, and safety.
- Interface with inspectors and project management; verify materials, grades, and layouts.
- Ensure compliance with DDOT/specs, traffic control plans, and trench/competent-person requirements.
Equipment Operator
- Safely operate excavators/loaders for trenching, lifting, and structure setting.
- Excavate to line/grade, protect utilities, and support trench box placement.
Pipelayer
- Set structures and install RCP to line/grade; perform jointing, tie-ins, and grouting.
- Use pipe lasers/levels; coordinate with operator and laborers for bedding and backfill.
Hillman
- Assist pipelayer with grade checks, laser setup, material staging, and structure hardware.
- Support compaction, traffic control devices, and site housekeeping.
Tailman
- Manage pipe handling, spot loads, maintain trench safety zones, and support backfill/cleanup.
- Assist with saw cutting, core drilling, and minor concrete/brick adjustments as needed.
Dump Truck Driver
- Haul spoils, stone, and materials; maintain load tickets and logs.
- Support site logistics and follow all DOT and site traffic requirements.
- Underground utilities/stormwater experience (DDOT experience preferred).
- Foreman 5+ years leading pipe/structure crews.
- Operator 3+ years excavation/utility install.
- Pipelayer 2+ years RCP/structure setting.
- Laborers (Hillman/Tailman) 1+ year civil/site work preferred.
- Proficient with pipe lasers, levels, and reading plans/profiles.
- Certifications (preferred/plus): OSHA 10 or 30, Confined Space, Excavation/Competent Person, First Aid/CPR, Flagging/Traffic Control.
- Valid driver's license (CDL required for Dump Truck Driver) and reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass pre-employment screenings and maintain compliance.
- Lift/push/pull 50–100 lbs; work in trenches and confined spaces.
- Exposure to weather, traffic, dust, and construction noise.
- Overtime, nights, or weekends as project requires.
