Position Summary: Writing consultants have the opportunity to hold interactive writing appointments with student writers from all disciplines on various writing projects such as essays, speeches, proposals, multimodal projects, etc. Consultants must understand the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays along with essay knowledge. Writing consultants should have a good understanding of grammar and mechanics as well. Knowledge in various rhetorical modes and types (e.g., literary reviews, analyses, blogs, websites, presentations) is beneficial.
Consultants will develop key skills such as communication, cooperation, and leadership, and will also have the opportunity to specialize in types of writing and citation styles. Students will complete and submit bi‑weekly timesheets.
Positions may be filled based on individual applicants’ skills, qualifications, and departmental needs.
Adheres to all department and University policies and procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities:- Develop key skills such as communication, cooperation, and leadership.
- Specialize in types of writing and citation styles.
- Maintain reliability and professionalism when scheduling appointments with students.
- Work effectively with a diverse body of faculty, staff, and students.
- Maintain confidentiality of information.
- Understand the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays along with essay knowledge.
- Have a good understanding of grammar and mechanics.
- Successful completion of EH 101 & 102 (or equivalent course) with a grade of
A. - Working knowledge of the writing process and various rhetorical styles.
- Familiarity in locating and documenting reliable and credible sources.
- Familiarity with MLA/APA citation styles; other styles are a bonus.
- Enrollment as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester.
- If not a first‑time student, a GPA of 3.50 or higher.
- Evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or MyJSU printout).
- Knowledge of University General Information.
- Relevant academic, computer, and/or administrative skills needed for the position.
- Knowledge of various rhetorical modes and types (e.g., literary reviews, analyses, blogs, websites, presentations) is beneficial.
- All international students must be in a valid immigration status.
- Due to Visa requirements, international students must be enrolled as a full‑time JSU student and possess each of the following:
- Passport from their respective country.
- F‑1 Student Visa or J‑1 Exchange Student Visa.
- U.S. Customs Form I‑94.
- Official social security card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement.
