This is a time limited position (NS-14). The Mississippi Department of Archives and History is recruiting a Mississippi Archaeological Survey (MAS) Site File Coordinator to serve in Historic Preservation. This position will be integral to the archaeology section and will report directly to the Chief Archaeologist.
The MAS Site File Coordinator will assign archaeology site trinomials, maintain the site file search room, and update the Historic Sites Management Tool (HSMT) in support of the agency's mission to identify, register, protect, and disseminate information about archaeological sites throughout the addition to overseeing the site file database, the Coordinator will write and edit cultural resource survey reports and will review Phase I archaeological reports, scopes of work, research designs, and cultural resource assessments to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
The Coordinator will also enter and maintain data in archaeology report logs and review databases, coordinate with MAS personnel for data entry and GIS needs, and provide assistance as required.
This position will contribute to the planning and execution of public outreach initiatives and events. It will process archaeological collections by cataloging, cleaning, documenting, and rehousing materials in accordance with 36 CFR 79 as needed. The position may also involve performing other duties as assigned.
What you'll need to be Successful
The candidate must demonstrate strong analytical and critical thinking skills, possess proven experience in technical writing, and be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4 years of experience. Agency preferred qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in archaeology, anthropology, history, or a related field; completion of an archaeological field school; and a minimum of one year of prior experience in North American archaeology. Preference will be given to candidates who hold advanced degrees and possess archaeological experience in Mississippi.
