Supervises and coordinates patient care services of one or more nursing units on a 24‑hour basis. The Director of Nursing ensures that physicians’ orders are followed; that patient conditions and progress are accurately reported; and that patient care is administered by all personnel in the unit in accordance with organization and regulatory policies and guidelines. The role also involves staffing and budget control responsibilities for the unit.
Responsibilities- Leadership:
Utilizes advanced clinical knowledge to develop and maintain a delivery system for individualized, appropriate, and compassionate patient care. Supports and encourages staff, patients, and significant others in determining treatment and rehabilitation goals. Provides leadership and participates in emergency measures for sudden adverse patient developments. - Demonstrates critical thinking, treats co‑workers with respect, enhances performance through cooperation, effective communication, and hospitality.
- Unit Management and Daily Operations:
Estimates future departmental personnel, equipment, and supply needs; develops and implements annual budgets; conducts periodic performance reviews and analyzes budget variances. - Clinical Expertise:
Facilitates timely availability and utilization of multidisciplinary health‑care services, alternative levels of care, and community resources to ensure optimal continuity and expediency. - Infection Prevention:
Implements strategies based on current scientific knowledge; promptly reports infections to improve patient outcomes. - Consultation:
Works with nursing management, staff, and Clinical Nurse Specialists to develop instructional materials for patients and families. - Documentation:
Maintains required documentation and ensures efficient recording of patient care data using computerized and manual methods. - Equipment & Resources:
Oversees use, maintenance, and repair of equipment, supplies, facilities, and resources. - Clinical
Competency:
Maintains own expertise and ensures staff competency for adult and geriatric patient care; supports infant, pediatric, and adolescent care as needed. - Performance Improvement and Quality:
Assesses patient care delivery systems; recommends staffing and procedural changes; supervises assessments of patients for status and discharge planning. - Patient Rights:
Coordinates high‑quality services, ensuring respect for personal values and beliefs, and patient participation in care decisions. - Continuous Quality Improvement:
Participates in unit‑specific and multidisciplinary initiatives to enhance quality and efficiency. - Education & Development:
Orients staff and provides continuous education; assesses learning needs; promotes continuing education. - Standards & Policies:
Establishes performance evaluation standards and monitors compliance with departmental and hospital policies, safety, and infection control standards. - Other Duties As Assigned:
Performs duties as requested.
- Education:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing. - Licensure:
Current licensure in good standing in the state of Mississippi. - Certification:
Current BLS required; ACLS preferred.
