Base pay range

$44,717.00/yr - $69,898.00/yr

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Qualifications

– Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) – and 7407(d).
  • Education:

    Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • Licensure:
    Full – active – current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States – or District of Columbia.
  • Grade determinations:
    The experience and Knowledge‑Skill‑Abilities (KSAs) required below must be evident in your resume.
Grade‑Level Experience & Education
  • GS‑03 LPN (Entry Level):
    No experience beyond the basic requirements.
  • GS‑04 LPN (Developmental Level):
    • a. Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN.
    • b. Graduation from an approved school and one year of experience in a medical–nursing setting.
    • c. Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
  • GS‑05 LPN:
    • a. Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑4 level or equivalent.
    • AND – Demonstrated KSAs including knowledge of practical nursing care, collaboration with RN/MD, medication administration, emergency response, documentation, and professional interaction.
  • GS‑06 LPN (Full Performance Level):
    • a. Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑5 level or equivalent.
    • AND – Demonstrated KSAs including technical proficiency in patient care, judgment in procedure sequencing, medication administration, patient education, emergency interventions, and continuous improvement of nursing practice.
  • Preferred Experience
    • Three consecutive years of LPN experience.
    • Two years of Long‑Term Care experience.
    • Experience assisting in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Range of Motion (ROM).
    • Reference: Nursing Qualification Standards.
    Duties
    • The Licensed Practical Nurse applies person‑centered care, tailoring treatment plans to individual patients.
    • Provision of Care:
      • Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) such as mobility, hygiene, grooming, bathing, toileting, dressing, and feeding.
      • Ensure meal consumption and safe feeding practices, including dysphagia precautions.
      • Administer oral and enteral medications, ensuring tube patency and proper positioning.
      • Perform hydration rounds and assist with dental hygiene and bath care using non‑aggressive techniques.
      • Set up and administer oxygen therapy, supervise suctioning, tracheostomy care, incentive spirometry, and medication administration following the six rights.
    • Documentation:
      • Record observations, changes, and deviations from normal in the medical record.
      • Chart drug response and adverse reactions promptly.
    • Preceptor:
      • Orient, educate, and support less experienced staff in complex procedures.
    • Resident Safety:
      • Follow infection prevention policies and use proper body‑mechanics techniques for turning, ambulation, and transfer.
    • Schedule:

      Rotating tours including weekends and holidays as required by facility needs.
    • Compensation:
      Competitive salary with regular increases, paid time off (37‑50 days), and benefits such as federal pension, 401(k), health benefits, and childcare subsidy based on income.
    • EDRP and Relocation: EDRP currently authorized for former participants, relocation assistance not authorized.
