Surgical Technologist

Job Description

The Surgical Technologist 3 prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures. Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patient during pre‑operation procedures. Performs pre‑operation preparations to the patient’s skin, body and medical equipment. May be required to transport patient to and from the operating room. Relies on education, years of experience and judgment to accomplish job. Works under general supervision.

Creativity and some latitude is expected to complete responsibilities.

• Surgical Case Preparation:
  Ensure proper equipment, instruments and supplies are provided for procedures and specialty areas.
• Maintain a well organized sterile setup/field at all times contributing to smooth operations.
• Anticipate and respond timely with efficiency when performing assignments.
• Follow proper sterile techniques and maintain a sterile field at all times.
• Assist RN with procedure/patient preparation.
• Know autoclaves and sterilization methods.
• Count instruments, sponges and sharps properly.
• Check instrumentation for accuracy prior to procedure.
• Scrub complex cases across all facility specialties.
• Demonstrate expert knowledge of surgical equipment and advanced instrumentation.
• Follow AORN guidelines and ensure proper supplies.
• Assist in patient positioning as needed.
• Collaborate and assist with OR staff to reduce turnover times.
• Respond to emergencies and trauma procedures.
• Serve as mentor and preceptor for new staff.
• Coordinate with OR Educator/Manager for in‑services.
• Partner with clinical programs for student rotations.
• Other duties as assigned.

• 5 years of experience as a Surgical Tech.
• Graduate of Surgical Technology program (1 year of experience will substitute).
• Subject matter expert in surgical subspecialty.
• Serves as a leader providing in‑services/education.
• BLS Certification;
  Certification as Surgical Technologist.
