Overview
This residency position is designed to give on-the-job training and experiences to prepare a candidate for a career in traditional church music ministry. The successful candidate would serve as an Assistant Director to Galloway’s Department of Music and Worship Arts and would report directly to the Director of Music and Worship Arts, and ultimately, to the Senior Pastor. He/she would assist the department to further develop what we are currently able to accomplish.
He/she should be musically skilled (in some combination as singer, choral conductor, handbell ringer, children’s or youth music teacher, pianist, or organist; with a willingness to expand current skills and develop others in these areas), highly organized, a good communicator (verbally and in writing).
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Music with some emphasis in Choral Music, Church Music and significant applied study in either voice, organ, or piano.
- Experience with choral or handbell conducting is preferred.
- Experience with children’s music education in church, school, or the private studio is preferred.
- Experience with Musical Theater is preferred.
- Comfortable with supporting the beliefs and values of Galloway United Methodist Church.
- Attend and participate in Chancel Choir and Concert Choir. Sing on a regular basis and be available to conduct at times. (If an organist or pianist, be available to accompany a soloist, be available to sing as needed).
- Attend and participate in Chancel Bells. Ring and be available to conduct at times as needed.
- Attend and Participate in Children’s Choir rehearsals. Help with activities, conducting, accompanying (if pianist) etc. Be available to help grow children’s music program by directing an additional choir or bell choir.
- Attend Sunday morning meetings at 7:30 and lead congregational singing at the 8:30 service, enabling the Director of Music to have time to prepare for (or add additional) Children’s music rehearsals. (A soloist might sing 8:30 offertories on occasion. An organist or pianist might play 8:30 offertories on occasion).
- Serve as Music Librarian. Keep all choral, bell and children’s music filed and organized in an appropriate and timely manner. Order music as needed and as directed by the Director of Music and Worship Arts.
- Serve as Robe Manager for Chancel Choir Robes and Children’s Choir Robes.
- Help or lead music in chapel for Galloway Children’ s Center each Monday morning.
- Work with the Director of Music to begin a more comprehensive music education program between Galloways Children's Center and the church.
- Lead music in Grace Place Chapel each Wednesday morning (or coordinate with volunteers to lead it as able).
- Assist with the String Band and or Concordia Ensemble as interest, skills, and availability allow.
- Communication to Chancel Choir, Chancel Bells, Children’s Choir Parents, etc. Includes group emails, phone calls, and/or texts related to attendance, sending out recordings of music to be learned etc.
- Help plan, produce, and publicize organ recitals and special concerts. Help with related details to these events (i.e. calendar requests, publicity, logistics, set up, tear down, etc.).
- Attend staff meetings and worship planning meetings.
- If an organist, join the line-up for playing seasonal lunchtime recitals, occasional services, accompaniments. Play weddings and funerals (if our Organist or Music Director are not available to play).
- Assist with bulletin creation in worship planning, funeral bulletins as needed, proof-reading, concert/recital program creation/editing, etc.
- Be available for work on Sunday mornings, Tuesday morning and afternoon meetings, Monday and Wednesday night rehearsals, Holy Week, Christmas Eve services, and regular scheduled hours for work TBD.
- Assist in the potential to rebuild Galloway’s Drama ministry (we have a desire to produce church and community-based musicals and/or plays for adults or children).
- Assist in planning other program building event such as tours, recordings, collaborative performances, etc.
