Overview
The Maintenance Mechanic position at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility involves maintenance of all mechanical repairs, including diagnosing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of food preparation, heating, and ventilation equipment, and other duties using blueprints and service manuals. Responsibilities include ordering materials, ensuring work complies with state and local codes, completing assigned work orders and preventive maintenance, maintaining grounds, and handling projects as assigned by the supervisor.
This is a hands-on position with the expectation of performing duties as assigned.

Experience- Maintenance Mechanic 7:
No specific type or amount is required. - Maintenance Mechanic 8:
Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades. - Maintenance Mechanic E9:
Four years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including two years equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic 8. - Maintenance Mechanic 8 - 10:
Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for two years of experience.
Some positions in this job series may involve duties requiring the application of pesticides, which may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976. Some positions may require possession of a commercial driver s license to operate a designated state vehicle.

Position DescriptionThe Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have felony convictions in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have misdemeanor or felony convictions are ineligible for employment until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees who are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) with either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their Non-Custody New Employee Training.
Overnight travel may be required for NCNET.
