Overview

Position

Registered Nurse positions at the Duane Waters Health Center. Some nurses may be assigned to inpatient, outpatient, or residential treatment programs within a correctional facility or as part of the Corrections Mental Health Program. Depending on assignment, the RN may work in ambulatory or inpatient settings within the complex or facility.

New hires for this facility will receive a one-time signing bonus of $5,000. The bonus is paid as $1,500 on the first pay warrant and the remaining $3,500 after completing one year (2,080 hours) of satisfactory service; leaving within one year requires repayment of the full amount.

Positions and Qualifications

Registered Nurse P11 – An experienced-level nurse performing a broad range of nursing duties. No specific experience is required.

Registered Nurse 12 – Functions as a senior worker or as an emergency/clinic nursing services specialist. Requires one year of RN experience or a master’s/bachelor’s degree in nursing with six months of RN experience.

Duties (Senior Level)

The senior RN position at Duane Waters Health Care Facility requires advanced clinical decision-making and judgment. The RN is a member of the interdisciplinary health care team and provides direct patient care independently on all units of the Health Center. The RN is expected to initiate and sustain life-saving care and perform the full range of clinical nursing duties. The workload may exceed standard methods and guidelines;

independent judgment is required. The RN 12 may function as Charge Nurse with minimal supervision. Daily contact with prisoners of varying security levels is required. This position is subject to random drug and alcohol screening. These roles provide a stepping stone for advancement into supervisory positions.

The positions are located at the Duane Waters Health Center in Jackson County.

Education and Experience

Education – Possession of a diploma, associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in nursing accepted for licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.

Experience

  • Registered Nurse P11 – No specific experience required.
  • Registered Nurse 12 – One year of experience as a RN required (or substitution options listed below).

Alternate Education and Experience

  • Possession of a master’s degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree in nursing with six months of experience equivalent to a RN P11 may be substituted for the RN 12 experience requirement.

Note:

The Department of Corrections may screen out applicants with felony convictions as per Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants with misdemeanor or felony convictions are ineligible until satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation.

Training

New hires to the MDOC and returning employees after more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) of 40 or 80 hours in person, plus required online trainings to complete non-custody training.
