The Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional functions as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, providing a range of professional treatment services to mentally ill and/or mentally disabled prisoners within the Michigan Department of Corrections. They work with hospitalized, medically ill, and other special populations. The QMHP is responsible for all aspects of the mental health evaluation, referral to the appropriate level of care and treatment of prisoners, monitoring progress, and ensuring continuity of care.
The QMHP provides a full range of psychosocial assessments and evaluations, interventions, consultations, and referral services as assigned by the supervisor. They assist with placement and obtaining services when the prisoner discharges to the community.
- Perform mental health evaluations and develop treatment plans for prisoners with mental illness or disability.
- Conduct psychosocial assessments, interventions, consultations, and referrals as required.
- Coordinate placement and discharge planning to ensure continuity of care in the community.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary treatment team and communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Possession of a master's degree with a major in psychology, social work, or counseling.
- Licensure as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (e.g., LPC, MSW) or equivalent.
- Experience requirements vary by rank:
- QMHP 9:
No specific type or amount of experience required. - QMHP 10:
One year of professional experience providing QMHP services equivalent to a QMHP 9. - QMHP P11:
Two years of professional experience providing QMHP services equivalent to QMHP 10, including one year at QMHP 10 level.
- Possession of a Michigan license to practice the applicable QMHP profession.
- Positions are test-designated and subject to pre-appointment, random-selection, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: crisis evaluation and intervention; treatment plan development; conducting assessments; ability to work with other professionals; ability to make independent clinical judgments; effective written and verbal communication; ability to develop therapeutic relationships.
Position is located in the Michigan Department of Corrections, Cooper Street Correctional Facility: 3100 Cooper St., Jackson, MI 49201.
