Position: Sr. Commissioning Analyst (EPM Startup, Testing, & Commissioning)

Contract Duration: Contract through April 2, 2027 (High potential for extension)

Location: Jackson, MI 49201

Travel: Approximately 30%

Position Summary

The Senior Commissioning Analyst is responsible for applying advanced engineering and commissioning expertise to support startup, testing, and commissioning activities across complex energy projects. This role independently evaluates and resolves technical challenges, ensures adherence to industry standards, and provides leadership in commissioning execution, procedural development, and training.

The position supports EPM projects by delivering high-quality oversight, documentation, validation, and training to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of newly installed or modified systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and/or develop commissioning plans including scope definition, scheduling, budgeting, quality control, and status reporting.
  • Coordinate and manage startup activities for new or modified mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Oversee checkout and startup activities, including supervision of technical teams and contractors.
  • Identify and mitigate risks to project schedule and budget.
  • Ensure adherence to established commissioning standards and company practices.
Technical Execution
  • Perform or manage testing of:
  • Low/Medium/High voltage cables
  • Transformers, motors, pumps, valves, dampers
  • Switchgear, MCCs, protection systems (CTs, VTs, relays)
  • Instrumentation and control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA)
  • Conduct or oversee hydrostatic, pneumatic, mechanical, and system acceptance testing.
  • Review and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
  • Update documentation to reflect accurate “As-Built” conditions.
  • Support design reviews and provide troubleshooting expertise throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure compliance with IEEE and NETA testing standards.
Documentation & Training
  • Develop and revise:
  • Operating Procedures
  • Alarm Response Procedures
  • Maintenance Procedures
  • Commissioning and test packages
  • Create training materials and deliver end-user training.
  • Develop project turnover packages and validation documentation.
  • Coordinate training activities with plant operations and maintenance teams.
  • Work closely with Project Management, Engineering, Construction, Operations, and Vendors.
  • Mentor team members and lead cross-functional project teams when required.
  • Support compliance with NERC standards, OSHA requirements, and utility regulations.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, electrical systems, and industrial instrumentation & controls.
  • Expertise in commissioning methodologies and testing standards (IEEE, NETA).
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics and P&IDs.
  • Experience with DCS, PLC, and SCADA systems.
  • Strong supervisory and contractor management experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to work effectively in team-based, safety-driven environments.
Education & Experience Requirements

One of the following is required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific or technical field + 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Associate’s Degree in a scientific or technical field + 6+ years of relevant experience
  • High School Diploma/GED + 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Reading electrical schematics and P&IDs
  • Performing/managing electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation testing
  • Exposure to NEC and NFPA 70E standards
  • OSHA 10/30 knowledge
  • Familiarity with NERC standards and MPSC Gas Code
  • Strong safety practices in utility or industrial environments
Working Conditions
  • Approximately 30% travel to generation plants, gas compression/storage facilities, and construction sites.
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in environments typical to electrical and natural gas facilities.
  • Exposure to heights, temperature extremes, uneven terrain, and construction site conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • May require weekend, holiday, overtime, and on-call support as project needs dictate.
