Assistant Controller

We are seeking an Assistant Controller to support operational and financial accounting across a portfolio of multiple operating companies. Reporting to the Corporate Controller, this role oversees day-to-day accounting activities, manages the monthly close process, ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, and drives process improvements across entities. The position plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls, improving efficiency, and delivering actionable financial insights to leadership.

• Oversee operational and financial accounting activities across multiple operating companies, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and adherence to GAAP and company policies
• Manage daily accounting functions including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and transaction review
• Monitor cash activity, accounts payable/receivable processes, and payroll accounting across entities
• Ensure proper accounting for intercompany transactions, allocations, and eliminations

• Lead and coordinate the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for multiple entities, ensuring timely completion and accuracy. This will involve rolling up your sleeves.
• Review and approve journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance analyses
• Prepare and review consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules
• Investigate and resolve discrepancies, unusual variances, and accounting issues
• Maintain and improve close calendars, checklists, and documentation standards
• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and company policies.

• Oversee intercompany reconciliations, settlements, and eliminations across affiliated entities
• Assist with preparation of consolidated financial reports for internal management and external stakeholders
• Ensure alignment of accounting policies and procedures across operating companies

• Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements to streamline workflows, reduce manual effort, and enhance reporting accuracy
• Develop standardized procedures, reporting templates, and accounting policies across entities
• Strengthen internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure reliable financial reporting
• Conduct periodic reviews of accounting processes and systems to drive continuous improvement

• Partner with operational leaders to support annual budgets, rolling forecasts, and financial planning
• Produce management reports and key performance metrics to support decision-making
• Perform variance analysis and provide insights into business performance
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance on technical issues and professional development
• Coordinate cross-functionally with operations, HR, and leadership teams
• Serve as a key liaison between corporate finance and individual operating companies
• Prepare ad hoc reports and analyses as needed for senior management.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
• Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and accounting principles.
• Prior experience managing and/or processing payroll.
• Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., ERP systems) and Microsoft Excel; familiarity with financial modeling and Sage X3 is a plus.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Attention to detail, strong organizational skills and an analytical mindset with the ability to solve problems effectively.

The hiring range for this hybrid position based out of Itasca, IL is between $120,000 and $150,000 per year.
