Position OverviewThe Senior Manager – Network Engineering is a strategic, technically grounded leader responsible for the planning, design, delivery, and lifecycle management of enterprise network and network security solutions across a large-scale retail footprint. This role leads a well-established team of network architects and engineers and serves as a key interface between engineering, operations, security, and executive leadership.
This position plays a critical role in onboarding business and IT-driven initiatives into the store network, ensuring seamless integration across network, security, and cloud environments. Success in this role requires strong “big picture” thinking, the ability to manage multiple concurrent initiatives, and the maturity to operate within a highly structured ITSM environment.
Team & Scope- Direct leadership of 2 Network Architects and 8 Network Engineers, with close collaboration across Project Managers and Coordinators
- Works in tight partnership with Network Operations (separate organization) to define intake processes, handoff models, and delivery standards
- Oversees network solutions supporting 1,000+ retail locations, corporate offices, data centers, and cloud environments
- Broad responsibility across store networking, SD-WAN, data center migration, cloud-first strategy, and enterprise network security
- Lead planning, intake, and execution of network engineering initiatives supporting business and IT programs
- Provide strategic technical leadership across architecture, design, and deployment of enterprise network solutions
- Own and evolve the network technology roadmap, including:
- SD-WAN migration and integration with security platforms
- Data center right-sizing and migration strategy
- Cloud-first networking and secure traffic routing from store to cloud
- Guide engineering teams without being “hands-on keyboard,” while maintaining deep technical credibility
- Ensure network environments are highly available, scalable, and capable of sustaining “five nines” store uptime
- Oversee enterprise network security, including protection of sensitive and confidential retail data
- Drive mature ITSM practices, including:
- Change management with advisory boards
- Structured transition from build to run
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to senior leadership and C-suite stakeholders
- Partner with security teams on AIM onboarding, PCI compliance, audits, and network segmentation strategies
- Lead vendor relationships and ensure cost-effective, future-ready solutions
- Foster a servant-leadership culture focused on advocacy, collaboration, and team success
- 8+ years of IT leadership or management experience
- 5+ years of hands-on technical experience in network engineering (preferred; flexibility for exceptional leadership profiles)
- Strong background in:
- Enterprise routing and switching
- Palo Alto firewall platforms
- SaaS and cloud network integrations
- Experience supporting large, distributed environments (1,000+ locations preferred)
- Retail experience strongly preferred (big-box or large footprint environments); financial services or similarly regulated industries also considered
- Demonstrated experience operating within highly regulated, security-focused environments (PCI, audits, segmentation, confidentiality controls)
- Proven technical leadership with the ability to guide architecture and engineering teams
- Strong executive communication skills; comfortable interfacing with senior and C-suite leaders
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple large-scale initiatives simultaneously
- High-level problem-solving and abstract reasoning capabilities
- Mature understanding of ITSM frameworks beyond basic ticketing systems
