Primary Purpose Provides analysis of specimens for review by the pathologist.
Minimum Specifications
Education
- Must have a Bachelor's degree in a Science related field; OR,
- Must have a Master's degree in a Science related field if a Bachelor's degree is in a non-science related field.

Certification/Registration/Licensure
Must be registered as a Cytotechnologist through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (CT-ASCP) OR
Registered as a Cytotechnologist with an International Accreditation (CT-IAC).
Skills or Special Abilities
- Must be able to demonstrate ability to exercise judgment based on technical knowledge.
- Must be able to demonstrate ability to maintain orderliness and to keep accurate records.
- Must be able to effectively follow written and oral instructions.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with laboratory staff and hospital employees.
Responsibilities
- Screens pap smears and non-gynecological slides and reports results according to established protocol.
- Reviews patient history in association with screening cytology slides.
- Documents workload and submits weekly reports for review. Reviews discrepant cases with Pathologist to improve and provide quality patient care.
- Maintains a False Negative Proportion (FNP) of 1-2% of the lab average but does not exceed a 5% overall FNP.
- Maintains an 80-100% Diagnostic Correlation with the Pathologist.
- Maintains gyn statistical analysis rates of 5% as compared to the laboratorys overall rates.
- Maintains individual workload limit as set forth by the supervisor/director, derived from the employees 6 month performance appraisal.
- Completes special assignments as designated by the supervisor in a timely and professional manner.
- Assists with Fine Needle Aspiration(FNA) adequacy assessments throughout various procedure areas in the hospital.
Job Accountabilities
- Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
- Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
