Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Athletic Trainer

Employment Status: Exempt

Reports To: Campus Principal, Campus Athletic Coordinator, Executive Athletic Director, Coordinator of Sports Medicine, Head Athletic Trainer

Pay Grade: In accordance with the annual salary schedule approved by the Board of Trustees (187 + stipend)

Primary

Purpose:

To carry out, upon advice and consent of the team physician and under the direction of the head athletic trainer, the practice of prevention, evaluation, recognition, first aid, emergency care, rehabilitation and reconditioning of illnesses and injuries to student-athletes. The athletic trainer will organize and administer a program which also provides counseling, guidance, and education for student-athletes in areas pertinent to the athletes' well‑being.

Qualifications
  • Minimum

    Education/Certification:

    Bachelor's Degree
  • Valid license issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
  • Board of Certification preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of subject area assigned, general knowledge of curriculum, instruction and athletic administration
  • Skill in the evaluation and management of athletic injury related trauma and emergency procedures
  • Skill in the use of physical modalities such as heat, light, sound, cold, electricity, or mechanical devices related to rehabilitation and treatment
  • Skill in the use of rehabilitation techniques and exercise physiology
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication
Minimum Experience

Completion of clinical observation hours as required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Provide injury evaluation and treatment for athletic injuries at practice and competition.
  • Provide prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation for all athletes.
  • Maintain the athletic training room and its inventory.
  • Determine which activities have the highest injury risk and provide on‑site supervision of those activities with input from supervisors.
Instructional Strategies
  • Provide instruction that is in line with the district's philosophy of education, instructional goals, and objectives.
  • Instruct and supervise students in a manner conducive to learning and appropriate to the setting and maturity of the students.
Student Growth and Development
  • Be available to students and/or parents for education related purposes during and outside the school day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Coordinate all actions in the athletic training room and classroom with both the campus goals and to meet individual needs of students.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication and use good judgment and tact with students, parents, fellow professionals, and medical community.
  • Provide required written communication in a timely manner.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Participate in professional development programs to improve job performance using innovative approaches.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge, understanding, and skill in athletic training and subject taught.
Policy Implementation
  • Keeps informed of and comply with applicable state, district, and school regulations and policies.
  • Support and assist the administration in implementing all policies governing student life and conduct.
  • Maintain records of athletic physicals, parent releases, medical records, and insurance records on each athlete.
  • Attend and participate in faculty/staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Adhere to the Professional Code of Ethics.
Supervisory Responsibilities

The athletic trainer oversees the safety conditions of the facilities where all athletics are conducted on the campus; supervises the athletic training room on the campus and is to enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times.

Working Conditions

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision‑making. Frequent in‑district and occasional in‑state travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
