Position Overview

One full‑time assistant project scientist is needed at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). This 1‑year position (with possibility of renewal) will involve overseeing projects and conducting research focused on language assessment, use, and intervention with African American children who speak African American English (AAE). The assistant project scientist will be affiliated with UCI’s School of Education and is expected to start on April 1, 2026 (negotiable).

Salary range: $76,700–115,400.

Responsibilities

The assistant project scientist will:

  • Oversee projects and conduct research on language assessment, use, and intervention with AAE‑speaking African American children.
  • Lead data management, train research assistants in data cleaning protocols, data analysis, and data archiving plans for all projects in the Language Variation and Academic Success (LVAS) lab.
  • Lead development of an archival database of LVAS projects.
  • Participate in writing manuscripts for publication.
  • Join a project team of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates conducting studies on patterns of performance in language, literacy, and mathematics skills.
  • Mentor and supervise graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Assist with designing and implementing research projects, collaborating and communicating with project co‑investigators.
  • Seek IRB approval and oversee active data collection projects.
  • Analyze data, write manuscripts for publication and presentation, and document information on the project(s).
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Education or a related field by the start date.
  • Prior experience leading research projects.
  • Expertise in research design and methodology, including psychometrics.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Successful record of publication and presentations.
  • Ability to work well with diverse teams.
  • Extensive working knowledge of African American English, including familiarity with language and literacy assessment.
