Surgery

The new hospital in Irvine, California will house inpatient surgical services that include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular and intensive care units. The Nurse Practitioner 2 will be an independent, team‑oriented clinician responsible for the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients.

Your Role on the Team

The position requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for surgical patients. Duties include, but are not limited to: evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, participating in inpatient sign‑out/hand‑off, rounding, communicating with surgery teams/residents/attending physicians, providing surgical consultations, performing resuscitations, coordinating procedures, admitting and discharging patients, triaging phone calls, reviewing critical labs, documenting thoughtfully, and maintaining professional development.

The nurse practitioner will provide multidisciplinary care coordination, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. Nurse Practitioners with RNFA credentials may assist in the operating room, collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team.

This Nurse Practitioner position is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) union.

Functions as Appropriate to Scope of Practice

The NP professional may provide patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and at all Health licensed settings and affiliates. The NP is accountable to supervising physicians, physician designees, or the Administrative Manager. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.

Required – What It Takes to be Successful
  • Obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Establish effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Communicate medical information clearly, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
  • Maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Possess the skills, knowledge, and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Adhere to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies related to PHI.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • NP National Board Certification (adult gerontology acute care, AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • One or more years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications.
  • Experience in trauma/critical care nursing.
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
