Your Role on the TeamThe position of Sr Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will manage inpatient care of surgical patients at our new hospital in Irvine, California. The role encompasses general and specialty surgical services—including colorectal, ENT, gynecology, hand, minimally invasive, plastic, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology and vascular—as well as intensive care unit support.
Key duties include consults, inpatient management, ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, hand‑off participation, rounding with surgical teams, surgical consultation, resuscitation involvement, procedural coordination, admission and discharge processes, triage, laboratory review, comprehensive histories, daily examinations, and trauma‑informed patient needs. The physician assistant must demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical competence, patient‑centered communication, timely documentation, and ongoing professional development. It is a union‑represented position administered by the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union.
What It Takes to be Successful
- Obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
- Complete HIPAA and other required training, Medical Center Annual TB screening, and any JCAHO‑required tests.
- Adhere to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies for Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Demonstrate the necessary skills, knowledge, and ability for the duties of the role.
- Show customer‑service skills appropriate to the position.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships across the program, UCI Health System, and broader organization.
- Exercise diplomacy and flexibility when interacting with physicians, nurses, paramedical staff, administrators, emergency and law‑enforcement officers.
- Communicate medical information clearly in person and over the phone.
- Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills for medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
- Maintain an appropriate work pace; be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
- Hold an active, unrestricted Physician Assistant license in the State of California.
- Be an active board‑certified member of the NCCPA.
- Possess an active National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.
- Hold a current DEA number issued by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
- Hold current BLS and ACLS certifications.
- Have two or more years of experience supporting the patient population described.
- Knowledge of Windows and MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook).
- Experience in trauma or critical care settings.
- Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
- Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
