About the Position

H2

MOF is tackling climate change by solving the greatest challenge facing the hydrogen economy: safe and efficient hydrogen storage.

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer/Senior R&D Scientist to take a leading role in developing the next generation reticular-material-based solid-state hydrogen storage systems and associated hydrogen refueling equipment. The engineer is expected to evaluate various hydrogen storage system designs based on adsorbent materials and assist in selecting components such as valves, pressure regulators, pressure and temperature sensors, pressure relief devices, refueling nozzles, and building and testing prototypes.

The engineer must contribute to structural, thermal and fluid flow analysis to evaluate hydrogen charging and discharging, storage pressures, storage temperatures, heat management methods and optimal methods of adsorbent media packaging. This position requires rigorous modeling and collaboration work spanning extended hours.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Prepare system designs, engineering drawings and BOMs.
  • Research and procure hydrogen compatible components.
  • Support prototyping including packaging of adsorbent materials, integration of thermal management systems, pressure containment, cryogenic and hydrogen safety systems.
  • Setup and maintain various modeling software tools.
  • Independently run various scenarios of hydrogen storage at various pressures, temperatures, tank sizes, thermal insulations and adsorbent media properties.
  • Support testing team on experimental verifications of predictive capabilities.
  • Perform safety, risk studies and other key analysis such as DFMEA, PFMEA.
  • Prepare process flow diagrams (PFD), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&).
  • Work in an integrated team comprising materials & process engineers, test engineers, and control system architects.
Essential Qualifications
  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in specifying and assembling cryogenic and high-pressure components including sensors, valves, pressure regulators, refueling nozzles, high pressure fittings, insulation materials, electric heaters, etc.
  • Experience and knowledge of heat and mass transfer, CFD analysis (COMSOL experience is a big plus), CAD industry-best practices and high-pressure and/or cryogenic storage.
  • Ability to meticulously record analysis processes and results and prepare detailed reports.
  • Willingness to undertake tedious modeling work including long-duration runs, troubleshooting and iterative improvements.
  • Proven experience in supporting hydrogen projects or fuel cell related developments is preferred.
  • Ability to contribute in a meaningful way in adsorbent system design, modeling, and application.
  • Excellent people and interpersonal skills.
