The Interpreter/Translator acts as an interpreter, using English and South Baffin Dialect Inuktitut languages, at meetings and also translates council and committee meeting minutes and correspondence in order to ensure proper communication between Councilors, staff and the public.

• Good knowledge of computer and other office equipment.
• Good ability to use computerized translation software.
• Strong keyboarding skills with the ability to operate at high levels of speed and accuracy.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in Inuktitut and English, with a thorough knowledge of spelling and punctuation.
• Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities/tasks while meeting set deadlines.
• Flexible availability including evenings is required for this role.

Minimum Level of Education/Training: Grade 12 or equivalent plus additional training in translation and simultaneous interpretation equipment.

Minimum Level of

Experience:

Minimum of 1 year experience in an Interpreter/Translator related role.

• Complet ion of a recognized Interpreter/Translator program.
• Ability to understand basic technical terminology for City Operating Services (Planning and Lands, Recreation, Fire and Engineering Services).
• French language (optional).

• Capacity to work evenings in addition to regular workdays when needed for council meetings.

• Due to the confidentiality associated with this position, a criminal record check is required.

L’interprète/traducteur agit en tant qu’interprète, en utilisant l’anglais et l’inuktitut, dialecte du Baffin du Sud, lors des réunions et traduit également les procès‑verbaux et la correspondance des réunions du conseil et autres comités afin d’assurer une bonne communication entre les conseillers, le personnel et le public.

• Bonne connaissance de l’équipement informatique et autre matériel de bureau.
• Bonne aptitude à utiliser des logiciels de traduction informatisés.
• Solides compétences en saisie‑clavier et capacité à taper à des niveaux élevés de vitesse et de précision.
• Capacité de communiquer efficacement à l’oral et à l’écrit en inuktitut et en anglais, avec une excellente connaissance de l’orthographe et de la ponctuation.
• Capacité à maintenir un degré élevé de confidentialité.
• Compétences interpersonnelles exceptionnelles.
• Capacité à gérer plusieurs priorités/tâches tout en respectant les échéances fixées.
• Flexible au niveau des disponibilités, dont la possibilité de travailler en soirée au besoin.

Diplôme de 12e année ou l’équivalent et une formation supplémentaire en traduction et interprétation simultanée.

Au moins une année d’expérience à un poste d’interprète/de traducteur.

• Diplôme ou certificat d’un programme reconnu en interprétation/traduction.
• Bonne compréhension de la terminologie technique de base des services d’exploitation d’une municipalité (aménagement et terrioitre, loisirs, incendie et services d’ingénierie).
• Connaissance du français.
