Overview

General All consultants in the department have a continuing and individual responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and a general responsibility to provide, in conjunction with their colleagues, an effective Service to meet the needs of the local population, within the resources available.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with colleagues to provide a consultant‑led service with the highest standard of care.
  • Work with the multi‑professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients and A&E.
  • Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care.
  • Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Participate in Consultant on call rota.
  • Attend general paediatric clinics.
  • Manage specialist clinics – Diabetes and Endocrinology (latter preferable).
  • Teach and train junior staff and undergraduates.
  • Provide other care of inpatients or outpatients as required.
  • Perform clinical and other administration as required by agreement.
  • Participate in Clinical Governance.
Job Plan
  • Expected to be a 10PA advisor; exact details agreed with successful candidate after appointment.
  • Participate in Consultant of the week rota on a 1:12 basis – one consultant on call covering general paediatrics in the morning and general paediatrics and neonates in the afternoon, with an additional consultant on call for neonates in the morning.
  • Participate in weekend and night on‑call cover.
  • Share outpatient responsibilities with a minimum of three paediatric clinics a week, depending on other commitments.
  • Share child protection/safeguarding work when Consultant of the week.
  • Contribute to relevant committees, working groups, educational supervision and training within the department.
  • Job plan reviewed as part of the Job Planning process of the trust and will be formally accepted and reviewed with the successful candidate.
Qualifications and Experience

Applicants will have completed CCT or equivalent Portfolio Pathway (formally CESR) and must be on the Specialist Register.
