What You’ll Do

The Trustees seeks a dedicated Livestock Caretaker to help strengthen local communities, demonstrate sustainable livestock practices, and support the conservation of agricultural land. You will oversee the well‑being of multiple species (cattle, pigs, barnyard animals) and maintain farm grounds and equipment, while interacting regularly with the public through educational programs.

Responsibilities
  • Handle day‑to‑day operational tasks, including livestock care, pasture management, and equipment operation.
  • Feed and water livestock and barnyard animals.
  • Monitor animal health, assist with routine care and vaccination, and support the Livestock Manager.
  • Maintain pasture lands: clear fence lines, remove downed trees, and perform mowing/weed‑whacking.
  • Maintain grazing infrastructure: pastures, water systems, travel lanes, fencing.
  • Conduct basic grounds maintenance to ensure a high‑quality guest appearance.
  • Assist with seasonal haying to produce year‑round feed.
  • Clean and maintain livestock buildings and public‑facing educational areas.
  • Handle animals calmly and respectfully at all times.
  • Support educational programming, community outreach, and special events.
  • Maintain the visual presentation of Appleton Farms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 1–3 years of related work experience.
  • Proficiency with basic hand tools.
  • Physical ability to walk long distances, lift up to 75 lbs, and push/pull up to 150 lbs in all weather conditions.
  • Comfort working closely with farm animals.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to learn new skills.
  • Attention to detail and a neat work style.
  • Basic knowledge and commitment to sustainable farming principles.
  • Interest in a mission‑driven organization focused on conservation and agriculture.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Drive vehicles under 10,000 lbs.
  • Successful criminal background check (CORI).
