Location: Derby
Overview
Maintenance Technician I – Derby, IA (Sow 32) role at Iowa Select Farms. This on-site maintenance technician is responsible for one farm (or a small set of farms) reporting to Production Operations (Breed-to-Wean Farm Manager). Last revision date: 9/08/2025.
Responsibilities- Adhere to ISF bio-security policy and report any violations to management.
- Adhere to ISF animal wellbeing policy and report any violations to management.
- Adhere to ISF safety policies and procedures, wear appropriate safety equipment (PPE), and work in a generally safe manner.
- Utilize the ISF Tools work ticket system to track repairs and materials for each repair.
- Demonstrate general trade knowledge, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry and welding.
- Prioritize maintenance and repair items based on priority, with animal welfare items (feed, water, air/ventilation, containment) as immediate concerns.
- Be available to work on weekends for emergency maintenance needs.
- Ensure preventative maintenance items are routinely completed for facilities and equipment.
- Manage and maintain on-site parts inventory as needed to complete repairs.
- Maintain the capacity to repair or replace: curtain systems; penning area fabrication and repair; feedline systems; ventilation; waterlines; building roofing, siding, or ceiling material; lighting, receptacles, and electric motors; heating and cooling systems; and, when needed, operate heavy machinery (e.g., backhoes, mowers, snow blowers, tractors, trucks and trailers).
- Assist in repair of well water systems and perform seasonal site improvements (snow removal, mowing, weed spraying, general site appearance).
- Keep the production location free from debris and maintain site appearance.
- Previous maintenance experience is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to read and write; physical capability to lift up to 75 pounds; ability to climb stairs and ladders; able to bend, stoop, kneel and reach.
- Basic computer and smartphone skills.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
- Full-time position, typically at least 40 hours per week; additional availability may be required during staffing challenges.
- Weekend and holiday on-call rotations required.
- Indoor work with exposure to outdoor conditions; noise; fumes or airborne particles; moving machinery; and potential contact with animals. Bio-security practices must always be observed.
- Must work with limited supervision; demonstrates initiative, organization, dependability, and self-motivation.
- Ability to troubleshoot a wide variety of mechanical issues; good communication and teamwork skills.
- Basic computer and smartphone skills required.
