Overview
Summary The purpose of the position is to perform biological science tasks common to natural resource management. Technician work is typically associated with and supportive of a professional field; work may involve substantial elements of the work of the professional field but requires less than full knowledge of the field involved.
Responsibilities- Assist higher-level specialists/technicians in conducting censuses and surveys
- Following instructions and standardized procedures, collect data on the condition of forage, range, or streams
- Assist in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines
- Use standard statistical methods and procedures in performing routine and recurring testing of field data
- Enter and retrieve data from Geographic Information System (GIS) and/or other information management systems
- Perform routine and recurring testing of collected samples; record all data and provide preliminary assessment and classification of the information
- Make field observations of natural resource conditions
- Install, operate, and maintain resource management equipment
- Utilize a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data
- Use mechanical and chemical methods to control invasive plants
- GS/4 Assists higher-level specialists/technicians in conducting censuses and surveys; collects data on condition of resources; assists in preparation of reports and guidelines; uses standard statistical methods to test field data
- GS/5 Performs routine testing of collected samples; records data; makes preliminary assessment; observes resource conditions; assists in preparing reports; installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment; uses computer programs for data work; uses methods to control invasive plants
- GS/6 Evaluates observed conditions and preliminarily determines causes; provides logistical support and area orientation for contracts or cooperators; installs, operates, and maintains equipment; calibrates for quality assurance; maintains computer databases
- GS/7 Plans and executes a wide variety of established natural resource projects; designs field project plans; prepares draft project reports with methods, data analyses, graphs, and recommendations; provides training to students and volunteers
