The Dickinson County Conservation Board is looking to hire a seasonal Roadside Technician. This is an excellententry-level opportunity for those looking to get their foot in the door in theconservation field. Gain experience in ecosystems management, integratedroadside vegetation management, trails maintenance, equipment maintenance and facilities maintenance.
Duties &Responsibilities
Duties include, but aren’t limited to:
- Assist with all aspects of the integrated roadside vegetation management program, which includes spraying of the ROW, removal of invasive species in the ROW including trees & shrubs.
- Assist with all aspects of ecological restoration and management of prairie, wetlands, and oak savanna throughprescribed fire, herbicide application, tree and shrub removal, and other tasksas assigned
- Assist with park, facility, and equipment maintenance, cleaning, and repairs when needed.
- Assist with trail maintenance on hard surfaceand undeveloped trails
Knowledge, Skills& Abilities
- Possess an interest in conserving localecosystems
- Possess the ability to walk, stand, kneel,crouch, reach, stoop, and climb to accomplish tasks
- Possess the basic ability to operate mowers,farm equipment and highway and off-road vehicles
- Possess the basic ability to safely operate power tools, chain saws, and weed eaters
- Possess the ability to work without direct supervision
- Possess the ability to regularly lift 50 lbs.
- Possess the ability to communicate effectivelywith peers and the public
- Possess the ability to work in difficult weather conditions when necessary
- Possess a willingness to learn on the job
- Possess the basic ability to operate GPS units
This is a seasonal position under the supervision of the Roadside Manager. Work hours are flexible with some weekend and holiday work rotation. Failure to perform dutiesmay result in termination.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license
- Knowledge in Natural Resources, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Wildlife and Fisheries,Ecology or a related field of study
- Basic knowledge of Iowa ecosystems,plants, and animals
Potential housing and dining options available upon request. Housing and dining fee can be discussed at time of interview.
