Title: School Nurse - District Wide

Registered nurse (RN) who advances student well‑being, academic success, and safety by providing direct healthcare, managing chronic conditions (like diabetes/asthma), administering medication, conducting health screenings (vision/hearing), and educating/leading the control of communicable diseases. Act as a health liaison between families, schools, and providers.

Position start date:
August 2026. The district serves approximately 850 students across the communities of Grandview, Letts, Fruitland, Cranston, and Muscatine in Louisa‑Muscatine Community School District.

• Registered Nurse degree with a valid Iowa license.
• CPR certification.
• Ability to work well with children, parents, and school personnel.
• Participation in continuing education programs to increase knowledge, update skills, and maintain certification.

• Demonstrates a caring and sympathetic nature.
• Relates well to people of all ages and backgrounds.
• Possesses knowledge of the health needs of children and young people.
• Ability to explore sensitive issues, with tact and patience.
• Possesses a clear understanding of confidentiality issues.
• Ability to remain calm in emergency situations.
• Ability to keep and maintain accurate records.
• Possesses good team‑working and excellent communication skills.

• Performs vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis health screenings.
• Provides emergency first aid.
• Supports children with medical needs.
• Dispenses medication as prescribed by a physician.
• Supervises and trains office staff to dispense medication in the absence of the nurse.
• Monitors student compliance with state immunization laws.
• Counsels students about chronic illnesses, nutrition, disease prevention and positive lifestyles.
• Interprets medical data and contributes to the health component of IEPs for students with disabilities.
• Participates with the school administration in investigating cases of suspected child abuse and neglect.
• Trains teachers and staff members to perform standard procedures that might be needed for disabilities.

The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Occasional lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Status: At‑will position exempt under FLSA.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated by building principals.
