Mercy One Elkader Medical Center is a 25‑bed critical access hospital, which provides a vital lifesaving link to rural communities in Clayton County and surrounding areas through ambulance and emergency services. Mercy One is committed to providing quality, personalized and safe health care close to home. The emergency department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with board‑certified physicians and advanced level practitioners who are well‑trained to treat emergency needs.

Mercy One Elkader Medical Center is certified as a Level IV Trauma Center by the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The Position is a Part‑time, PRN Maintenance Technician who will perform routine building and grounds maintenance tasks in the following areas: carpentry, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, emergency generator, boilers, etc. The Technician will also manage communications with contractors and vendors and perform other tasks as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect buildings and other structures to determine functional systems, detect malfunctions and make repairs as needed. Order parts, keep notes, and maintain required documents. Perform minor repairs of functional systems and execute daily, weekly, monthly and yearly departmental preventive maintenance (PM). Maintain safety at all times and outsource to contractors when necessary.
  • Perform minor electrical maintenance, including replacement or repair of fixtures such as wall switches, outlets, bulbs, fuses, and minor appliances using appropriate hand, power and specialty tools. Assess safety at all times.
  • Complete minor plumbing maintenance, such as repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging drains, and replacing drain hoses on washers and similar devices. Assess safety at all times.
  • Perform minor painting, carpentry and masonry work. Prepare surfaces and use brush, sprayer or roller to apply paints, stains and varnishes, hang doors, fit locks and handles, etc. Assess safety at all times.
  • Inspect, repair, operate and perform PM on boiler systems. Assess safety at all times.
  • Inspect, repair, operate, test, and perform PM on backup electrical generators. Assess safety at all times.
  • Plan and execute remodels or reconfigurations of work spaces (moving furniture, wall panels, work surfaces, storage bins, lighting, file cabinets, wiring, plumbing, etc.) using various hand, power and specialty tools. Assess safety at all times.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors for inspections, repairs and construction jobs. Obtain and compare quotes, prepare SBARs, obtain purchase orders and schedule work.
  • Be responsible for snow removal and cleaning of parking lots, sidewalks, grounds and other work areas, coordinating with outside vendors as necessary. Ensure safety of employees, patients and visitors.
  • Monitor and record required information for infection control for both internal performed maintenance jobs and contracted work. Maintain department records for quality assurance initiatives of the hospital. Schedule inspections and repairs of Life Safety Code systems (fire alarm, sprinkler system, fire extinguishing systems).
  • Assist with equipment assembly, troubleshooting and repairs of medical and non‑medical equipment, escalating to Support Service Director as needed.
  • Interface with work order system to monitor, plan and execute repairs and requests.
  • Be able to work flexible hours including on‑call maintenance hours.
  • Perform day‑time EMS driver duties as assigned by EMS Manager.
Schedule
  • PRN, varied schedule.
General Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Create an environment for patients and families through personal contact in the waiting area and/or patient rooms.
  • Maintain good organization skills.
  • Maintain a professional working relationship with a variety of customers including contractors/vendors.
  • Utilize a variety of construction tools.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
