This person provides support in the medical field by performing various medical and clerical activities to assure quality care and a more efficient workplace.
Essential Functions- Escorts patient to exam room. Obtains and documents data including but not limited to chief complaint, allergies, vital signs, pain assessment, medication reconciliation, and fall risk.
- Obtains and reviews basic health history information. Prepares exam room with equipment and supplies required for the visit. Assists with exams/procedures as requested.
- Utilizes Mercy One Medical Center – New Hampton policies/procedures and universal precautions when performing lab/diagnostic tests or procedures. Reports and documents critical lab/diagnostic test values to the provider.
- Performs, maintains and documents quality controls as applicable (logs, proficiency tests, maintenance records, etc.).
- Assists in scheduling patients for office appointments, lab/diagnostic tests/referrals. Reviews test preparation handouts with patients and documents in the medical record.
- Refs patients to provider/nurse for further education; obtains waivers/consents; completes charges to include diagnosis and billable supplies/services; obtains ABNs or prior authorizations as necessary.
- Utilizes proper procedures for administering medications and treatments with emphasis on patient safety; documents administration of medications and treatments.
- Maintains competency in administration routes (IM, SQ, , oral, inhalation, ocular, topical, sublingual, nasal).
- Documents notification/follow-up of phone messages per provider’s orders; MA’s do not act as phone nurse.
- Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures; identifies safety concerns; maintains professional appearance and relationships with coworkers and patients.
- Assists in cost containment by maintaining supplies in workstations and exam rooms; supports Lean concepts and participates in continuous process improvements.
- Provides basic education to patients and documents in the medical record; participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs; maintains confidentiality per HIPAA.
- Supports maintenance and quality control of immunizations, stock, controlled substances, and emergency equipment/crash carts; assists provider in updating medical records and health maintenance plans.
- Communicates with and follows Mercy One Medical Center – New Hampton guiding behaviors and values; performs duties professionally and in alignment with the organization’s mission and safety policies.
- Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.
- Education:
Graduate of an approved school for medical assistants; credentialed as a medical assistant (CMA, RMA, NCMA) required. - Experience:
A minimum of six months’ work experience in a health care facility performing duties related to patient care is preferred. Additional experience involving computer knowledge is a plus. - Skills and
Competencies:
Strong communication, professionalism, organization, and computer skills; ability to adapt; acts as a patient advocate. - Licenses/Certifications:
Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association or American Red Cross) prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintain current status. - Mandatory Reporting:
Completion of Mandatory Reporting:
Child and Dependent Adult Abuse within 6 months of hire and renewal every 3 years.
