Job SummaryThe Medication Assistant (MA) serves as a caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. The Certified Medication Assistant has knowledge of and delivers age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per plan of care. The MA assists with basic health‑care needs, daily living activities (bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital signs), psycho‑social support, and personal care.
The MA assists with transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct transfer techniques and equipment, and provides passive range‑of‑motion exercises. The MA completes food‑preparation and dining tasks, providing a positive dining experience, and assists residents with meals, snacks, water, and supplements. The MA administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse within scope of practice, documents outcomes, and communicates changes in condition and medication concerns to the charge nurse.
The MA collects non‑invasive body‑fluid specimens, gathers vital signs, and provides housekeeping and laundry services to help keep living areas clean and operational. The MA participates in wellness and recreational programs and may serve on departmental or organizational committees.
- High‑school graduate or GED preferred (but not required).
- Minimum age of 18 (preferred).
- Prior clinical or nursing‑assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Satisfactorily completes yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing‑education credits (minimum 12 hours annually).
- Maintains all required department‑specific certifications.
- Valid driver’s license and auto insurance may be required.
- Iowa:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, and completion of a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course once CNA certification is obtained. - Minnesota:
Nursing‑assistant certification, completion of the 75‑hour course, and registration with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry; completion of a state‑approved Trained Medication Assistant course. - North Dakota:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, and completion of a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course once CNA certification is obtained. Medication Assistant I certification required for Assisted Living or Basic Care;
Medication Assistant II required for skilled nursing facility. - South Dakota:
Successful completion of the state‑approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course; CMA certification maintained with the State Board of Nursing. - All Good Samaritan and Sanford nursing facilities:
State‑required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA); active certified nursing assistant registration in state of practice or ability to obtain within 120 days.
