Job Description

The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking engineering students who want to gain hands‑on experience in the world of construction. This internship offers exposure to highway construction projects across District 5, covering counties such as Warren, Clarke, Decatur, Wayne, Lucas, Marion, Mahaska, Monroe, Appanoose, Wapello, and Davis.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspection duties on highway construction projects, including measuring and documenting quantities, sampling and testing materials, and ensuring compliance with Iowa DOT plans, specifications, and standards.
  • Inspect small to moderately complex projects such as grading, paving, bridge culverts, erosion control, fencing, guardrail, and weatherization for compliance, reviewing field construction reports and material certifications.
  • Document construction progress and activities in computerized record‑keeping programs, preparing periodic reports on project progress and expenditures (item progress, materials used, and test results).
  • Assist resident construction engineer in compiling and analyzing project reports.
  • Monitor ready‑mix and Portland cement concrete paving plants to verify material testing, check record‑keeping progress, and plant compliance, performing standard tests such as air and slump tests on concrete and density and thickness on asphalt.
  • Review traffic control set‑ups on highway construction projects in low‑traffic rural areas to ensure safety and compliance.
Qualifications
  • Eligible majors:
    Engineering (civil, construction, materials, transportation, or engineering management).
  • Completion of at least two years in civil, construction, materials, or transportation engineering, or in an engineering management curriculum at an accredited four‑year college or university, with eligibility for junior status upon return to school.
