Summary:
Position is expected to start 5/18/2026 and end 8/21/2026. Maximum of 400 hours (10 weeks), 40 hours per week. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. No work will be performed on the following University of Idaho observed holidays – Memorial Day (May 25), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July
4).
Summer Internship – Precision Agriculture/Community Food Systems
- Install remote data logging device to pair with Raspberry Pi data collection systems to monitor the soil, air, and humidity in five high tunnel structures throughout Valley and Adams County.
- Assist at tabling and outreach events throughout the community to promote research project and ALL UI Extension programs.
- Co‑write and establish research procedure and collaborative documents to implement a regional study focused on using remote sensors and precision agriculture in case study regional data set study.
- Co‑write a draft of the Extension case study bulletin to share information on the establishment of gathering regional research collaborators documenting the technology implementing and the monitoring system established throughout the region. Co‑authorship on any published information post‑study is possible for student intern that contributes significant written contributions to this study.
- Teach youth and adult education to highlight remote sensing and precision agriculture initiatives throughout the summer by conducting classes at one of the research site locations. Help plan event logistics throughout the summer and pre‑plan fall programs to highlight precision agriculture project at public outreach events.
- Design marketing materials to help educate the public on the efforts of the Extension office to help fund, support, and implement Precision Agriculture to strengthen local food resiliency.
- Help install and/or troubleshoot infrastructure at monitoring sites throughout the season. Possible construction of a high tunnel greenhouse is possible, depending on the timing of start and finish dates of internship.
- Attending professional development opportunities as available.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Preparing an internship experience final report and submitting to the UI Extension Director and supervisor at the conclusion of the internship.

Position QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- Must have completed a minimum of 12 credits within the last year (these 12 credits may come from high school dual enrollment credits) and are currently enrolled at one of the following eight Idaho public universities or colleges (private Idaho universities or colleges do not qualify). Priority will be given to University of Idaho student applicants.

- Must provide own transportation and have the ability to travel to multiple work sites. University will follow applicable policies if personal vehicle is used, which may include reimbursement at a pre‑established rate.
- Completed coursework in Engineering, Precision Agriculture, Agriculture, Environmental Science, STEM Education, or other relevant subject areas.
- Comfortable sharing techniques and methods with the public and Extension volunteers (youth and adults).
- Experience establishing and monitoring remote data logging equipment using Raspberry Pi or other similar technology.
- Excellent writing skills to communicate the establishment of methods used in collaborative data collection process.
- Self‑motivated and capable of working independently.
- Enjoys working in a variety of settings and environments with various audiences.
