Basic Function: The Special Education Aide is responsible for helping students be successful in the classroom. This position is for part-time, afternoon help.
Essential Functions- Under the supervision and with instruction of the teacher, assist in individual and small and large group instruction.
- Supervise students in the lunchroom, restrooms, halls and in those areas as requested.
- Monitor classes during teacher absences of short duration.
- Operate audio-visual equipment.
- Assist in preparation of instructional materials.
- Assist in location of resource materials.
- Perform clerical tasks such as making telephone calls, filing and maintaining student records.
- Assist in field trips.
- Score tests.
- Be patient with students; utilizing firmness, friendliness and fairness.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Know emergency procedures for the building and classrooms within which you work.
- Report incidents of unusual nature to teachers and principal.
- Communicate and cooperate with staff members.
- Participate in professional training.
- Follow district policies.
- Other duties as assigned.
Special Education Aides should have the patience of a saint.
Any employee not covered by a negotiated contract agreement is an “at-will” employee. Either the school district or the employee can terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause, so long as there is no violation of applicable federal or state law. The school district can define the number of days notice required of a terminating employee.
