Overview

The University of Iowa Central Microscopy Research Facility (CMRF) is an Office of the Vice President for Research core resource offering a wide array of instrumentation to research investigators. We are seeking a Core Facility Research Professional to perform laboratory maintenance, reagent preparation, and reagent inventory. You will prepare biological research samples for microscopic analysis using established laboratory techniques, including fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, and staining of specimens to ensure high-quality sample preparation.

The candidate will be encouraged to broaden their skill set due to the variety of equipment within the facility.

Work Modality: In-Person, Eckstein Medical Research Building (EMRB).

Position Details

Pay and Compensation: Pay Grade: 4A

Responsibilities
  • Prepare biological samples for microscopic analysis using established laboratory techniques (fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, staining).
  • Perform laboratory maintenance and reagent preparation and manage reagent inventory.
  • Assist with handling a variety of equipment and broaden skill sets as needed.
Qualifications

Education or Equivalency Required: A Bachelor's degree in Biology or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Typically 1 year of general biological laboratory support experience.
  • Proficiency in histology specimen preparation and sectioning techniques.
  • Experience performing fixation of biological samples for microscopy applications.
  • Knowledge of histotechnology principles and/or certification.
  • Experience operating light microscopy systems.
  • Skilled in biological sample preparation and related methodologies.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring accuracy and attention to detail, including accurate record keeping.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills with the ability to interact positively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with digital imaging software (FIJI, Bitplane Imaris, or similar).
  • Experience in immunogold-labeled sample preparation for microscopy applications.
  • Proficiency in computer networking, data transfer, and data management practices.
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures, and regulations.
