Overview

Staff Nurse, Vascular Surgery – UI Heart and Vascular Center:
As a Vascular Staff Nurse, you will deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to cardiovascular patients across our main campus, Iowa River Landing, and outreach sites. This role involves building meaningful relationships with patients over the long term while supporting recovery and wellness journeys. Our outpatient nurses continue utilizing inpatient skills such as IV placement, wound care, suture/staple removal, and blood draws.

Our clinic operates Monday–Friday and is closed at nights, weekends, and holidays. Hours are flexible with 8- and 10-hour shifts available; schedules can be discussed during the hiring process.

Responsibilities
  • Function as clinical staff nurse within the UI Heart and Vascular (HVC) outpatient/ambulatory team.
  • Perform patient intake and vital sign monitoring, document current medications and allergies, perform suture removal, wound dressings, and related tasks.
  • Collaborate with other services to schedule and coordinate additional testing for diagnosis or medical clearance.
  • Apply nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
  • Assess patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Develop patient care plans based on patient condition, age, and psychosocial factors, prescribing interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Implement patient care plans according to patient priorities, including interventions identified through nursing diagnoses; document/report interventions and patient/family response.
  • Collaborate and integrate contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plans.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement transfer/discharge planning throughout the episode of care.
  • Implement nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff; follow universal precautions.
  • Maintain skills/competency related to equipment, medications, and procedures common to the unit/division.
  • Serve as clinical preceptor to new nursing and/or agency staff as directed by leadership.
  • Provide clinical care/cross-coverage to all HVC locations as needed.
  • Utilize, adhere to, and support departmental standards and practice guidelines.
  • Demonstrate professional responsibility, flexibility in assignments, and consistent professional behavior and appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing, Diploma in Nursing, Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
Experience
  • 1 year experience providing direct nursing care in an Outpatient Cardiovascular Clinic, Adult Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Adult Electrophysiology Lab, Telemetry Unit, Cardiology Unit, Cardiovascular ICU and/or ER within the past 6 months.
  • Demonstrated ability to professionally interact with patients/families, nursing staff and other multidisciplinary team members required.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a high-volume ambulatory setting with limited supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and clinical expertise in the specific clinical area of practice required.
Certification and Licensure
  • Current certification in BLS required by start date.
  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa required by start date.
Desirable Qualifications
  • 3 years’ experience providing direct nursing care in an Outpatient Cardiovascular Clinic, Adult Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Adult Electrophysiology Lab, Telemetry Unit, Cardiology Unit, Cardiovascular ICU and/or ER within the past 6 months.
  • 1-year previous knowledge and experience providing wound care.
