Overview
The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Fire and Life Safety Manager. The Fire and Life Safety Manager is responsible for the life safety compliance program of the University of Iowa Health Care. This role corrects life safety and infection control deficiencies during environmental rounds, inspections of repair, maintenance and construction activities. It oversees and coordinates the above ceiling inspection permit program and maintains Joint Commission and other required regulatory life safety and environment of care documentation, including UI Health Care life safety drawings.
The position reviews life safety plans for all construction activities and serves as the point of contact with the University life safety consultant. The incumbent investigates life safety compliance issues and communicates findings as appropriate. The Fire and Life Safety Manager reports to the Director of Engineering Services.
- Maintain life safety documentation for Joint Commission and regulatory agencies and maintain accuracy of life safety drawings.
- Maintain the above ceiling permit program and review/approve/disapprove permit applications; inspect permit locations for compliance.
- Review interim life safety measures/precautions and ensure compliance.
- Participate in Infection Control Risk Assessment Committee and related responsibilities; review and approve ICRA applications/modifications; inspect maintenance, repair and construction locations for life safety, ILSM and infection control compliance.
- Participate in and manage above ceiling inspection program; ensure life safety and environmental compliance during construction activities.
- Demonstrate effective Verbal and Written Communication skills; proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word; use mobile devices; communicate non-compliances to appropriate management; coordinate with department leadership to achieve scheduled shutdowns and construction schedules; communicate with AHJ during surveys.
- Manage financial resources by overseeing capital and non-capital funds, develop and support life safety budgets, and adjust operations to meet unit goals.
- Provide continuous training and coaching; promote leadership, accountability, and high performance; supervise and coordinate with contractors as appropriate.
- Develop programs and plans of action for preventative, routine and predictive maintenance; coordinate duties across work units; track data and inspection results; maintain procedural, operational and budget records.
- Review and approve procurement of parts and supplies; ensure compliance with policies and procedures; maintain safe work environment and update operations and maintenance procedures; oversee vendor service contracts; determine staffing levels and structures.
- 3-5 years of experience in an environment with regulatory or compliance responsibilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Valid driver’s license and authorization to drive UI Fleet Services vehicles when necessary.
- Master’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience managing a life safety program in a healthcare setting including management of a Joint Commission Statement of Conditions or similar program.
- Experience coordinating Joint Commission pre-accreditation mock internal surveys and environmental rounds; maintaining regulatory compliance records.
- Experience escorting Joint Commission and CMS staff during accreditation surveys.
- Experience coordinating Infection Control Risk Assessment and Interim Life Safety committees in a healthcare environment.
- Knowledge of codes and procedures applicable to hospitals (TJC, OSHA, DOT, etc.).
- Demonstrated supervisory experience and project coordination.
- Understanding of hospital policies, procedures and services to effectively communicate with patients, guests and staff.
- Master’s Degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
