Overview
The Department of Pathology is seeking a Paramedic to provide specialized care to patients in a highly regulated environment. Perform work that involves numerous steps and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. Operate cell separators and other equipment while caring for patients undergoing apheresis procedures. Provide care to patients with varying levels of acuity and age, ranging from outpatients to highly acute inpatients.
Follow regulatory standards from Joint Commission, FDA, CAP, FACT and AABB. This position is 100% time, Monday-Friday, 1st shift, 8 or 10-hour shifts between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:30 pm, rotating on-call and holiday on-call.
- Performs therapeutic phlebotomy for patients.
- Performs therapeutic apheresis procedures.
- Under the direction of a provider, or in an emergency when the patient’s life is in immediate danger, the paramedic may perform the following:
- Airway – Nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, bag-mask ventilation
- Endotracheal intubation – assist anesthesia with intubation
- Treat anaphylaxis per protocol
- Reviews and/or participates in quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment.
- Draws laboratory samples as required.

- Graduation from high school.
- Current paramedic certification by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
- Current course completion card in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider by the American Heart Association
- Current course completion card in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by the American Heart Association
- Minimum one (1) year advanced life support field experience as an emergency response paramedic, or equivalent hospital experience.
- Current course completion card in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) by the American Heart Association
- Excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
- General computer skills.
- Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task.
- Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) Certification.
- Prefer applicants with an Associate Degree in Paramedic.
- Previous experience using electronic medical records.
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
- Experience using highly specialized medical equipment.
