Position: Central Service Tech I or II 3rd Shift 90% - Downtown Campus

Overview

The University of Iowa Medical Center Downtown's Central Sterilizing Services department is seeking a full-time Central Service Technician I or Central Services Technician II. This position will be located within the Downtown Campus. Under general supervision, this role performs and has operational responsibility for complex technical duties involving all aspects of sterile processing, including decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, distribution of sterile medical devices, and inventorying, stocking and distribution of medical supplies.

Responsibilities
Central Service Tech I:
  • Clean, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, store and dispense complex surgical instrumentation, devices and implant trays. Transport contaminated and sterilized/high-level disinfected devices following infection prevention practices. Operate reprocessing equipment including automatic endoscope washers, sonic washers, mechanical washer/decontaminators, inspection equipment, and sterilizers. Perform microbicidal processes, standard/transmission-based precautions, engineering, and work practice controls.
  • Perform infection prevention processes to remove contaminants from surgical instruments and items. Handle large volumes of complex medical instrumentation, flexible endoscopes, delicate eye instruments, power equipment, and different instrument patterns.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment by adhering to Standard Precautions and Infection Control practices, including proper PPE, safe chemical handling, and body mechanics.
  • Access reference materials via computer systems, follow guides to assemble high volumes of complex instrument and implant trays. Inspect and evaluate instruments for function and cleanliness. Ensure quality assurance mechanisms are in place. Label, seal and document all items processed. Use computer systems to locate, track and trace medical devices and instrumentation trays.
  • Perform all aspects of sterilization, packaging inspection, equipment operation, safety procedures, proper documentation, and prioritization. Sterilize items per manufacturer IFU and verify correct parameters for all instruments.
Central Service Tech II:
  • Serve as lead technician by demonstrating expertise in central sterilization processes. Identify operational concerns and take corrective action. Assign technical duties to personnel and ensure shift duties are completed accurately. Monitor staff competency, provide feedback, and support performance evaluations.
  • Under direction of the CST IIIs, perform all aspects of training within their area and document employee training progress in training guides.
  • Decontaminate, disassemble, inspect, clean, sort, and reassemble complex surgical instrument and implant trays. Operate automatic scope washers, sonic washers, mechanical washer/decontaminators, inspection equipment and sterilizers. Transport contaminated and sterilized devices following infection prevention practices. Perform microbicidal processes and standard transmission-based precautions.

Infection prevention processes to remove contaminants from instruments, utensils and other items. Handle large volumes of complex instrumentation and varied instrument patterns.

Schedule

3-12 Hour Shifts, Tuesday-Thursday, 7pm-7am. Rotating call and holidays.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements
Central Services Tech I:
  • High school graduation or equivalent, with courses in physical and natural sciences and mathematics; or
  • One year experience in a hospital-related field providing a background in medical environment or sterile technique as it applies to medical supplies and equipment.
Central Services Tech II:
  • Verified experience with or documented completion of a medical terminology course;
  • High school graduation or equivalent, with courses in physical and natural sciences and mathematics; and
  • Must possess and maintain certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or IAHCSMM; and
  • Two years of related experience in a medical field including a sterile processing component, or;
  • One year of working in sterile processing and one year of experience in a functional supervision role, or;
  • One year of related experience in a medical field that includes sterile processing and one year of college-level coursework.
