Position: Central Service Tech I or II 3rd Shift 90% - Downtown Campus

Overview

The University of Iowa Medical Center Downtown's Central Sterilizing Services department is seeking a full-time Central Service Technician I or Central Services Technician II. This position is located at the Downtown Campus and performs and has operational responsibility for sterile processing duties, including decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, distribution of sterile medical devices, and inventorying, stocking and distribution of medical supplies.

Provides functional supervision to students and Central Services Technician I staff.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clean, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, store and dispense complex surgical instrumentation, devices and implant trays. Perform transportation of contaminated and sterilized/high-level disinfected devices following infection prevention practices. Operate reprocessing equipment including automatic endoscope washers, sonic washers, mechanical washer/decontaminators, inspection equipment, and sterilizers. Perform microbicidal processes and apply standard/transmission-based precautions, engineering, and work practice controls.
  • Perform infection prevention processes to remove contaminants (blood, tissue, fluids, bioburden, etc.) from surgical instruments and items. Handle large volumes of complex medical instrumentation, flexible endoscopes, delicate eye instruments, power equipment, and various instrument patterns.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment by adhering to Standard Precautions and Infection Control practices, including proper PPE, safe chemical handling, and ergonomic practices.
  • Access reference materials via computer systems, follow guides to assemble high volumes of complex instrument and implant trays. Inspect and evaluate instruments for function and cleanliness. Confirm quality assurance mechanisms are in place. Label, seal and document items processed. Use computer systems to locate, track and trace medical devices and instrumentation trays.
  • Perform all aspects of sterilization, packaging inspection, equipment operation, safety procedures, proper documentation, and prioritization. Sterilize items per manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU) and verify correct parameters for all instruments.
  • Supervisory and Training Responsibilities
  • Serve as lead technician by demonstrating expertise in central sterilization processes. Identify operational concerns and take corrective action. Assign technical duties, and support performance evaluations and staff competency assessments.
  • Under direction of CST IIIs, perform all aspects of training within the area of responsibility and document employee training progress.
  • Decontaminate, disassemble, inspect, clean, sort, and reassemble complex instrument and implant trays; operate associated washers, inspection equipment and sterilizers; transport contaminated and sterilized devices following infection prevention practices.
  • Schedule

    3-12 Hour Shifts, Tuesday-Thursday, 7pm-7am, rotating call and holidays.

    Minimum Eligibility Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent, with courses in physical and natural sciences and mathematics; or equivalent combination.
  • One year of experience in a hospital-related field providing background in medical environment or sterile technique.
  • Verified experience with or completion of a medical terminology course.
  • Must possess and maintain certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM).
  • Two years of related experience in a medical field with a sterile processing component, or one year of working in sterile processing and one year of supervisory experience, or one year of related experience plus college-level coursework.
