Summary
Performs Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body. These exams are performed with and without contrast materials to achieve diagnostic studies that enable proper diagnosis and treatment. A recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized for highly qualified applicants.
Qualifications- United States Citizenship:
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Certification:
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R). - Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
- Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
- Education:
Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other recognized accrediting agencies. - Credentialing Standards:
All candidates must meet the credentialing standards described in 42 CFR Part 75 — Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. - Physical Requirements:
See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. - English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d)‑ and 7407(d).
- Grandfathering Provision:
Employees who are retained as a DRT under this provision and subsequently match the requirements must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment.
- This is an open continuous announcement; applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed on a rolling basis as long as the vacancy exists.
- Schedule exams in a manner to optimize all radiographic equipment, including MRI scanner times, while maintaining flexibility to allow for emergency cases.
- Prioritize scheduled patients and accommodate emergency patients requiring immediate imaging.
- Consult with radiologists to determine requirements for non‑standard exams and determine technical factors—positioning, number and thickness of scans—to produce results that satisfy MRI scanning requirements.
- Schedual patients for examinations and advise radiologists or referring physicians of results, notifying them of scans requiring immediate attention.
- Assist radiologists and anticipate their needs, remaining continuously alert to the patient's condition and any reactions.
- Prepare contrast materials used in MRI and general exams, ensuring thorough understanding of contrast material usage to avoid patient risk.
- Insert IV needles for administration of contrast material when necessary.
- Load and unload laser camera, maintain records and files of exams performed, and manage patient logbooks, requisition and editing of patient exams in the Radiology Information System (RIS).
- Properly identify patients through the RIS interface and confirm patient name and social security number to prevent mistaken identity of films.
- Screen MRI patients in advance for contraindicating conditions per Radiology Service policy.
- Explain exams to competent patients to ensure understanding of procedures and potential hazards.
- Stock and inventory all MRI supplies, review new developments in MRI, and continuously improve quality of examinations using new technologies.
- Assume rotating schedules as determined by the Chief – Radiology Service, available and flexible to be on‑call both nights and weekends.
- Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 07:30 to 16:00. - Recruitment Incentive (Sign‑on Bonus):
Authorized Pay and competitive salary with regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days per year. - Parental Leave:
