Overview
The University of Iowa Health Care department of Food & Nutrition is seeking a Clinical Dietitian. This position uses the Nutrition Care Process to assess, evaluate, and provide medical nutrition therapy and nutrition counseling for GI, ortho, and general medicine adult and geriatric inpatients. It also teaches Master of Clinical Nutrition Students, participates in multidisciplinary teams, and develops the nutritional components of care.
The role demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient’s status according to age.
- Provides quality patient care including nutrition screening, evaluation, assessment, treatment, and documentation of patient care plans appropriate for each patient.
- Educates students with on-the-job training; evaluates them and provides necessary support and assistance to ensure work is completed.
- Assesses nutritional status and instructs/counsels patients on appropriate diet.
- Participates as part of the medical team concerning problems affecting patients’ food habits and needs, and participates in health team rounds concerning patient care.
- Assists in the implementation of studies and short‑term projects.
- Performs special projects as assigned.
- Participates as active member of departmental/hospital committees.
- Reviews and analyzes production, maintenance of standards, costs, and personnel utilization records to evaluate progress of work and to control or reduce costs.
- Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Provides functional supervision over Diet Clerks.
- Assists other dietitians as needed.

$57,000 – Commensurate

- A Master's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Candidates registered prior to January 01, 2024 must have a Bachelor’s degree in Foods and Nutrition or Dietetics.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration is required.
- Licensure by the State of Iowa is required.
- Master’s Degree in Food and Nutrition or Dietetics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5 years of clinical nutrition experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated competency of patient care in the GI, orthopedics, and general medicine adult and geriatric populations in the inpatient setting. Experience in making enteral and parenteral recommendations and selecting appropriate formulas.
