Patient Care Technician – Children's Perioperative Services – 50% – University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA.
The Stead Family Children’s Hospital Department of Perioperative Services is seeking a 50% Patient Care Technician. Under direct supervision, the technician assists nursing staff in providing multiple types of patient care in inpatient and outpatient settings. The role requires familiarity with a wide variety of nursing procedures used in delivering patient care.
Position Responsibilities- Independently obtains and records vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
- Performs medical asepsis during tasks such as phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, and care of medically isolated patients.
- Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of skin, dressing changes, specimen collection, and application of binders, braces, etc.
- Performs special duties taught and directed by the nurse in charge including phlebotomy, ECG lead/12‑lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
- Assists with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
- Directly provides for patients’ personal hygiene and comfort.
- Turns, positions, and ambulates patients.
- Transports patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
- Feeds patients, serves drinking water and nourishment, and records patient intake.
- Assists patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
- Participates in nursing care conferences; reports pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
- Provides comfort measures through social interactions.
- Maintains equipment and supplies, ensuring cleanliness and proper use throughout the unit.
- Assesses equipment and supplies needed for diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses.
- Cleans areas per designated guidelines and standards, using approved disinfectants and cleaning products.
- Stocks and supplies patient rooms and nursing units.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Effective verbal, electronic, and written communication with patients, families, and health‑care staff.
- Maintenance of patient confidentiality.
- Provision of age‑appropriate patient care.
- Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments, and supplies.
- Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
- Basic keyboarding and computer data entry skills.

Schedule:
10‑hour shifts. Primary hours: 0600‑1830 with some evening rotation. No weekend, holiday, or on‑call requirements.
