Position SummaryUnder direct supervision, assists the nursing team in providing patient care in in-patient and out-patient areas. The role involves familiarity with a wide variety of nursing procedures used in patient care.
Key Responsibilities- Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
- Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal; care for patients who are medically isolated.
- Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, specimen collection, applying binders and braces, etc.
- Perform special duties as directed by the nurse in charge (e.g., phlebotomy, ECG lead/12-lead placement, brace/pin site care).
- Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
- Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
- Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
- Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
- Feed patients, provide drinking water and nourishments, and record intake.
- Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
- Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
- Provide patient comfort through social interactions.
- Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of the unit.
- Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies for diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses.
- Clean areas per guidelines using approved disinfectants and proper care of housekeeping equipment.
- Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, family members, and health care staff, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
- Ability to provide care appropriate to patient condition and age.
- Knowledge of sanitation principles and health hazards.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments, and supplies.
- Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
- Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.
Percent of Time: 60%
Schedule: 12-hour shift (1830 - 0700) Saturday and Sunday
Location: Downtown Campus
Pay Differentials: Shift differentials for evening and nights.
